A growing number of senior veterans and their spouses are eligible to obtain benefits from the Veterans Administration to help offset the costs of assisted living.  These important benefits are based on meeting certain criteria, such as time of service, assets and income.

The most important qualification is time of service.  A veteran who has served in the armed forces for no less than 90 days, of which at least one day was served during the following time periods:

World War II – December 7, 1941 through December 31, 1946
Korean Conflict – June 27, 1950 through January 31, 1955
Vietnam War – August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975
(or - February 28, 1961 for veterans who served in country before August 5,1964)

There are other considerations which must be included in applying for benefits.  For instance, benefits are generally based on the total gross yearly household income of the claimant minus medical expenses (including the cost of assisted living for those needing medical assistance and supervision). Total household liquid assets cannot exceed $80,000, with some possible exceptions.

If you believe that you or your spouse may qualify for this valuable benefit, we encourage you to contact your county veterans' affairs officer.  For residents of Pike County, Pennsylvania, please contact:
